A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic.
This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
whether it resolves the issue you reported.

I've been fighting this same problem since upgrading from Intrepid. I
looks like X does not load all the dependencies for glx... here's my
xorg.conf which works for my radeon 9600 dual monitor setup. (xorg-
xserver-ati-video),
