On intrepid I could use Skype with no CPU usage.
After upgrade I get both CPU at maximum during the entire call, and I

sound jitters, skype test call jitters and then if I am using pulse,
within 5 minutes of having skype loaded (not using it), 1 CPU core jumps
to 100% and stays there.
I am starting to hate pulse. I think it's been 3 or 4 releas
so...skype in UBUNTU 9.04 :
with ubuntu the audio in skype dind't works, i change the audio option and :
_if i choose the channel hdi works only one auricular but works, cpu normal.
_il i choose the pulse audio channel works but cpu going crazy.
skype in KUBUNTU 9.04 :
works perfectly...no problem

Skype with Ubuntu Jaunty is unusable at the moment. Initiating a call leads to
100% cpu usage even on a 2 Ghz Dual Core CPU You can talk for a random
amount of time until the sound is broken.

and pulseaudio.

Same problem here, Skype and jaunty 32bit.
During a call the CPU starts rising up to 100% and stays there until I
stop the conversation.
In addition the sound disappears after a while, I can't hear anything
but the other person in the call can hear me.
I configured soundin and ringing to pulse a

60-70% CPU from skype start (no need to make call).
However when I change Skype setting from pulse to plughw CPU goes down
to normal.

That didn't help the situation much. Skype still uses most of the CPU
and there's about a 5 second delay in the conversation which gradually
lengthens to about 20 seconds after a few minutes.

Have you tried halving the fragments-msec parameter (to 5) in
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf? Then, killall pulseaudio and allow it to respawn
automatically.
