Thanks for reporting this issue. I am unable to reproduce it, since I am unable
to get a usplash screen in either Ubuntu or Xubuntu 8.10 using the vesa options
at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FrameBuffer#Setting_different_framebuffer_resolutions_in_GRUB
. I tested this on two hardware systems.
