I fixed this by re-installing jaunty from scratch. It's not as bad as it
sounds, you can install over the top and it retains your home dirs and users.
You can also do:
dpkg --get-selections > ~/selections
dpkg --set-selections < selections
sudo apt-get dselect-upgrade
and it will restore you
By the way, my solution, since upgrading to 8.04, is to always plugging
in an earphone to muffle the noise. Fortunately I almost always work at
office and home so I keep an earphone at both locations.

Ok it appears that the volume control only starts failing after I've run
