I also experienced this after an upgrade to Intrepid.
The above fix worked for me (unchecking "Pointer can be controlled using
the keypad").

That worked for me, thanks! Mouse keys was on. The weird thing is it
only started happening after I upgraded to Intrepid. Does Intrepid
automatically select that option? Because I never changed anything...

I newly got this problem on a i386 installation with Hardy. The num pad
worked normally with Gutsy before the upgrade. And it appears to work
good in the console.

I've been having a similar (same?) problem on Gutsy. I thought an
upgrade to Hardy would solve the problem, but it only got worse. The
numpad stops working after a short while, as opposed to stopping working
at random times, after a while (which is what I experienced in Gutsy).
This is really annoy
Are you experiencing this problem only in X, or at the Linux console
too?
