I don't have Maverick installed, but both bugs persist on Lucid with
gnome-media 2.30.0-0ubuntu1.
Thanks.

With gnome-media 2.27.91-0ubuntu1 (part of karmic alpha 6) the first bug is
fixed.
The second bug is still there.

I click the volume control gnome applet and select the "Volume Control..."
button. This runs gnome-volume-control and not gnome-sound-properties.
System -> Preferences -> Sound indeed run
reopening the bug, the tab there might be better hidden since there is
another dialog working better to do those change

Yes, I just rechecked.
I have the latest package version installed (still 2.26.0-0ubuntu3).
If it matters, this is a system upgraded from intrepid, not a new
install.
BTW, why was the package changed from gnome-media to gnome-control-center?
the relevant binary is /usr/bin/gnome-volume-control,
do you still get the issue using current versions? similar bugs have
been fixed since beta in jaunty

Thank you for your bug report, I'm not confirming the bug though,
reselecting default switches the combo to ubuntu there
