Hi Michele,
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

I have experienced similar issues (ATA exception at resume) and they
were triggered by the hdparm calls at resume. For those with these
errors, please try either editing /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/95hdparm-apm
to not call resume_hdparm_apm, or temporarily rename /sbin/hdparm to
/sbin/hdparm.orig. An
If I read comment 7 correctly, the problem appeared originally with
laptop-mode-tools disabled, so it is most likely a kernel issue.

With your brief testing, it hasn't broken. Assuming that it doesn't
break, it would be clear that it is not a laptop-mode-tools bug because
the version of laptop-mode-tools in Karmic Koala and Jaunty Jackalope is
the same.

I changed the -B argument of hdparm to 254 but without success (in every
90-hdparm.sh).
HD always stops working after some seconds and sometime doesn't restart.
Now I switched to Kubuntu Karmic Koala, the HD stops as before and
restarts fine, but I used Karmic on battery very few time.

Any update guys ?
Do you still see it to be a problem with LMT or should this be re-assigned to
the linux kernel package ?

My bad. ata2 is the CD ROM. With the 80 GB drive, suspend resume seems
to be working fine. I had not encountered this error with earlier
versions of the ubuntu with ata1 or ata2. Will see if fresh install in
the 160 GB drive will change anything.
Thanks.

Are you sure you are seeing your HDD having problems ?

You received this bug notification because
The DRDY error is now occurring even without suspend and resume.

Harddisk stops working after wakeup
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/358943
You received this bug notification because
I replaced the new 160 GB hard drive with the older 80 GB pata hard
drive with Ubuntu 8.10. Suspend resume works like charm with 8.10. I
then did a fresh install of ubuntu 9.04 on the 80 GB hard drive and on
suspend and resume I am seeing this error again
[11182.452987] ata2.00: exception Emask 0x
I just looked into the logs you had provided.
* You hdd support IDLE IMMEDIATE UNLOAD. So, are you using hdapsd ?
If yes, you'll also see unloads when you physically move the laptop. I'm not
sure if this increases the Load Cycle Count.
* You smartctl log doesn't show the Load Cycle Count value
Michele,
Can you post the output of the following command ?
grep POWERMGMT /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf
Is your kernel error message resolved ?
BTW, here's what hdparam says

First of all I did a full backup of my HD :-)
Then I did a full smart check and no error was reported.
Now my laptop, when running on battery, spin down the HD every 8-10 seconds of
inactivity;
this power management policy is too aggressive as I already said in a top post.

I have the exact same problem with dell 700m 160 GB samsung PATA drive.
After resume dmesg has the exact same pattern as reported earlier

I had suspected this. I'm not sure though whether it is a bad hardware
of a suspend bug.
LMT, by itself, doesn't do much. Usually if there's an LMT bug, a simple
ON_AC => ON_BAT => ON_AC will be able to trigger it.
I'd suggest you first do a full backup of your data. And then try with
different k
With LMT active the situation is bad as before.
On battery after 8 seconds of HD inactivity it spins down.
This aggressive timing stress to much the HD, it is a non sense.

Well,
I did some mistake with this bug report.
First off all I didn't enable the LMT and smartd on my system.
Now I have ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE=true on /etc/default/acpi-support
and start_smartd=yes on /etc/default/smartmontools.

Really I don't.
I suppose LTM because the problem starts after the last update of pkg
about the first days of this month.
