thanks for the quick answer, I had this problem once only (and some
more weird stuff) on that install; I checked out another machine >> no
error/bug, then reinstalled as paketmanager crashed, fine now, bug
marked as invalid, thank you

GParted should not ask for the root password (there is none in default
Ubuntu), but it should ask for the user's password when started from the
menu (and it does that for me--unless you entered your password shortly
before, which is the default sudo/gksu behaviour in Ubuntu).

I can't confirm this -- gparted asks for password and I can create a
ntfs partitions without problems...
