I did not experience this issue in the latest release since I don’t use
the above-mentioned laptop with Kubuntu anymore. So I cannot say whether
this problem still persists.

Maybe I should add this: After this problem occured, I reset the
computer, of course. When KDM had started again, I noticed a slight
flickering of the screen, maybe caused by the backlight. This went away
after a few minutes.
