Hi Patrick. Can you please try installing "linux-backports-modules-alsa-
karmic" (then reboot) & report your results? A number of audio problems
on HP laptops have been resolved by installing this package. Also please
ensure there are no extra "alsa model quirks" in your /etc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base.

Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.
