Josmar gave me a fix: Install mgltools-opengltk
Type this in the console:
$ sudo apt-get install mgltools-opengltk
It's still a bug though, because the code shouldn't crash. It should
exit gracefully or allow the package to be downloaded.

my problem was same as that of manzur. thanks to robert. it works. but when i
again try 3d it crashes. and never opens again using this again " gconftool-2
--toggle /apps/glchess/show_3d " helped me to open in 2d again. thanks again. i

On Ubuntu 8.10 & 9.04rc (both amd64), I have no crash but I have not the
expected behaviour.
I get a message saying python-opengl is missing to display 3D mode. But
pyhon-opengl IS installed.
Looking closely I saw python-opengl is only available with version number 3
(for python3 ?).

Confirming this behaviour. Note that this is a python-opengl bug. I've
opened a bug against that package (bug 351284) but will keep this open
here as most users will perceive this as a glChess bug.
