Hi,
I tried an identical drive (they were bought on the same day)
and the second one works fine.
On the other hand, my drive which fails in karmic
works fine on a lucid laptop and also there under Windows.
So in my case it seems to be a hardware problem

If I look at my Synaptic installation (screenshot attached), it appears
that the incorrect linux-restricted-modules-generic is installed and in
need of an upgrade.
Is this any concern?

May-7-2009: Latest updates from ubuntu included a partial upgrade to
Linux 2.6.28-12. Linux generic (not sure which version) was removed.
When I restarted after the update, the external drive was recognised.
I don't know if this is the permanent fix, or if more work is required,

Also wanted to report this bug. Doesn't look like a fix has been pushed
out yet? My USB drive is not there upon boot but if I plug in another
usb device everything gets automounted all at once.

I'm not sure if I am supposed to do something with Brian's entry. I'm a
relative newbie, so if there is something that I need to do, then I will
need specific instructions.
I don't know if this helps, but from a cold boot:
1. The BIOS boots and appears okay.
2. The GRUB menu comes up and proceeds

What is frustrating is that I had to do a clean install. I did the
installation from Alpha-5 and the USB drive was instantly recognised.
When I upgraded (I assume to Alpha 6) through the Update Manager
