I guess the issue was in xorg's intel driver because on Karmic the
brightness increasing works correctly when you install pommed (see Bug
397617)

Same here - Macbook 2,1 on Jaunty.
When I uninstalled mouseemu I've noticed that F9 does something strange with
backlight. I have the F1-F12 keyswap activated, and after uninstalling mouseemu
F9 switches to lower backlight level and back.
