progress completes, my screen flashes a couple of times and all I get after
that is a messed up screen with a blurry text saying something like "Asus". It
just hangs there.

Same problem with ubuntu's v8.600 and with official fglrx v8.602 (catalyst
9.4). Jaunty RC. Video card 4870x2.
Need recovery mode : apt-get remove fglrx* and reboot.

I have the same kind of problem, but only with multihead setup! As in,
with 8.600 driver I can use everything with a cloned desktop.
Specs:
- AMD Phenom II X4
- 64-bit Ubuntu intrepid beta (updated < 30min ago)
- ATI HD 4650 based graphics card
The multihead configuration was created with "ati
I had the same problem, with generally similar solution:
(video: ATI Radeon Mobility X300)
./ati-driver-installer-9.2-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/jaunty
dpkg -i *.deb
aticonfig --initial -f
#reboot
