Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. This particular bug has already been reported and is a
duplicate of bug #337469 (and that bug was fixed with matplotlib
0.98.
An upgrade to python-matplotlib (0.98.5.2-1ubuntu2) and python-
matplotlib-data (0.98.5.2-1ubuntu2) resolved this issue. To the best of
my knowledge, this upgrade was first available via "apt-get update; apt-
get upgrade" on 25/3/2009.

A workaround, from within ipython, is:
import matplotlib
matplotlib.use('GTKAgg')
import pylab
