I had this issue using the latest smplayer and mplayer from the
launchpad repositories.
The freezes were happening in mplayer and in smplayer. I changed the
audio output to "pulse" instead of "alsa" and the problem went away.
I changed them both in /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf and in smplayer's
pref
I have the exact same problem. Except the files won't refuse to stop.
Instead, they just randomly stop playing. The seekbar freezes where I
was in the video.
