I believe my problem was caused by Ubuntu not Firefox. I disabled the
Ubuntu Firefox Modifications addon and this seem to resolve the problem.

Resolved issue. I disabled the Ubuntu Firefox addons and the problems
ceased. This also remedied the issues with graphics and media displays.
