@Ekin: sorry, I have no more ideas to help you. If your files and the
directory around them all have UID,GID = 1000,1000 then gedit should be
able to save its "*~" backups.
If you find a recipe to reproduce your problem, namely to create a new
file where gedit 2.28.x fails, then please write it he
@Oliver:
I applied your suggestions. I made a
rm -rf $(find ~/ -name "*~")
and then changed GID with
chgrp -R ekin ~/
Before those commands the UID was 1000 and GID was 100. Now they are all
1000. But the error that Gedit gives with my old files continues.

@ Ekin:
As Oliver already pointed out, it's correct to close the bug as "Fix Released",
when it is fixed in the current development version. That's how it works.
To get a fix into the current stable version of Ubuntu, we firstly need
to know which part of the code is responsible for the fix.
Unfo
Please also check the ownership (UID/GID) of your files and backups with
"ls -aln". Ubuntu normally registers a default user with UID 1000. If
the UIDs/GIDs of your Fedora files are different, then this explains why
you're affected by this bug.
As a workaround you could delete all backup files tha
Let me make it more clear:
I had a long-standing home partition which I transfer without a touch
when I install a new system. Yesterday, I removed Fedora from my system
and installed Ubuntu 9.10. Then, Gedit gave this error when I open an
old file from my aging home directory and try to save it. H
On saving newly created files I would not expect this error anyway.
Backups are only saved when a text file already exists and GEdit has to
overwrite it. This error occurred if the original file could be written
but the backup failed.
I think closing this bug with "Fix Released" is correct here, e
I discovered that Gedit does not give this error on saving newly created
files. I have lots of files in my home directory from my older
installation of Fedora and Gedit works fine with newly created files.

Furthermore, Gedit is the default text editor for GNOME and not a hell
hole program. By the way, no traces of Gedit in /var/log/.

You cannot close a bug due to Ubuntu 10.04's shipping with Gedit 2.30,
because:
1. Ubuntu 9.10 still has at least 1 year of support before EOL and
people are still using it as a production system,
2. Ubuntu 10.04 is not released yet and not production ready.

Kind of "solved" in 2.29.92.1
But now gedit NEVER complains if unable to save backups, even if backups are
enabled but fail! I can live with this, particularly since backups are now
disabled by
default.

I confirm that this is still an issue in Karmic and in Lucid alpha 2.
Typically it occurs when multiple users want to edit a file and
therefore make it -rw-rw-rw-. A usecase is a notes.txt that has to be
editable from a Live-CD and your normal account.
To reproduce:
1 sudo touch /test.txt

@Sebastian: what we wrote in bug #251083 means that I was wrong in
making this bug a duplicate, because here the description and all
comments are exactly about what I still see in Lucid alpha 2. So I
reopen this bug, make it a non-duplicate, and relocate my comment. If I
