USB key works in Breezy not in Dapper

I found that the USB key stopped working after I used the "system
upgrade" option of the update manager.
lsmod showed usb-storage module not present. After I modprobed it, the
usb LED lit up in the appropriate sequence of flashes, but I did not
find it mounted.
Suspicion: update was run without U
