I did some more thorough testing, and found that the problem is in
package gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
I can install any combination of gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg, gstreamer0.10
-plugins-bad, and gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse and DivX will
function as expected (though none provide WMV/ASF support)
I did another fresh install of Jaunty 32bit Alternate with all updates.
Installed packages in the following order, testing after each one:
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg
gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly
libavcodec-unstripped-52
I did an apt-get remove libavcodec-unstripped-52, and it's still choppy.
No
I'm sure it is fixed in KARMIC, I don't know about jaunty :(

This bug is affecting me as well. I have just done a fresh install of
Jaunty using the Alternate 32bit CD. I installed ubuntu-restricted-
extras. Playing the attached video yields good video but choppy audio. I
have attached a list of all my installed packages
** Attachment added: "packages.txt"
These are the packages that are installed in my system which works.
Yes, you can also try to do this from an usb stick.
Also are you trying with my attached divx or are you using another one?

again.
The fix against mp3parse was committed Friday March 13th but the Ubuntu
packages have a version tag which looks to me like 10 days before that,
i.e. 3:0.svn20090303-99. Am I misunderstanding anything?

I tried from a live USB key.
Unfortunately, the problem is the same.
Any ideas how to provide some more useful input?

could you try from a Jaunty live usb key?
It's possible to install packages.
I'm asking this because I've cleanly installed jaunty and this issue
is not bothering me anymore
