At some point Amazon must have fixed the problem. There have been no
more upgrades of flash, but the version 11.2.202.280 of the plugin now
updates at Amazon and works.

There was only one upgrade and as I recall is it was adobe-flashplugin.
I obviously didn't expect a problem and didn't pay a lot of attention.

Could you provide more details about update that causes the error?
e.g. Were there other packages include in that upgrade?
Which package was updated (adobe-flashplugin, flashplugin-nonfree)?

At the end of the session I found I could only turn off my PC using the
power point on the wall. On rebooting it appears to have repaired
itself. Hope this helps.
