running pulseaudio under root and then using paplay to play a sound file
works. Seems to be some kind of permission change somewhere preventing
normal pulseaudio users from accessing the sound cards.
To test this yourself run:
sudo -i
pulseaudio &
paplay /usr/share/sounds/question.wav
You should
output of running aplay -l as root:
