Xfce 4.8 includes Xfwm4, which has a built in compositor. This makes it
much harder to integrate the compiz functions in. If you install compiz,
that breaks xfwm4, since compiz is a replacement window manager for
xfwm4. You can not run two window managers at the same time.

Using XFCE 4.8.0 on Natty and the issue remains. I don't like Emerald
either and I just want to use the xfwm4 window decorator. That will
never be possible?

I'm running version 4.6.1 and still can't get compiz working using
xfwm4. I dislike emerald either and got used to xfwm4, so I would be
greatful for help.

As I wrote, this issue is already fixed in the latest development
version (jaunty). To get the fix, you can upgrade to Xfce 4.4.3 (which
should be in the backports repository, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports), or wait until April
for Xfce 4.6 in Xubun

should be fixed in xfwm4 4.4.3 and xfwm4 4.6 (with the "xfwm4 --replace"
