That's the reason, but we're also working on fixing it. We are in the
process of completing the backport by upgrading all plasmoids to work
with libplasma3. In the meantime, if you remove the libplasma2 package
and then sudo apt-get install kdeplasma-addons it should complete the
core KDE install

Is this invalid because it's a problem with backports rather than an
official repository???
Please, someone just tell me the reason so I don't have to guess.
(And if that is the reason, then I'll know in future not to include
backports on a production machine.)

The error I receive following the update is exactly as I quoted;
synaptic won't let me install kdeplasma-addons, without which lots of
plasmoids are unavailable. What about that is invalid?
