This has happened a few times:
User1 on F8 console
User2 on F9 console
User2 playing streamed music in Firefox
Switch to User1 on F8
Music stops playing
After around 30 sec:
Screen blanks
I get this, see second line:

Still seems to persist, but not as much of an issue now. Originally,
when I installed the OS, I would finish up and reboot, and the speakers
would screetch at me until I slid the volume slider down a bit. At that
point, everything would work fine, aside from seeing that error show up

I will hopefully get this tested tonite. The issue for me had to do with a
particular motherboard - ASUS m2nsli with Nvidia Bios. I think it was more of a
compatibility issue with the bios rather than a pulse audio issue. Either way,
I will test this and get back to you shortly.

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid.

Only Banshee quits, rythmbox seems unaffected.

It looks like I have the same issue, but instead of a hanging system,
Banshee is exiting too.

I think I have a related problem, my system just hung and after
rebooting all I can find in the message log for the correct time is as
follows (I was playing music through Banshee at the time) :-

alsa without pulse work fine
