it's been awhile that the kernel boot option "noapm" worked fine, until
last couple days, the gnome panel hangs again, and this time lots of
machines hangs after 8 hours of usage (gambas 1, openoffice 2.4, firefox
3.0.9, pidgin), though the system was booted with noapm option in the
grub menu.lst.
nope, i always disable desktop effects since it brings more performance
and less bug.
i found a way to fix this problem with disable the apm feature in
kernel. i added the "noapm" option in /boot/grub/menu.lst to the grub
defoptions and then do update-grub. voila, now the hang issues were gone

they both hang after long period of usage. one using ati radeon onboard
graphic card paired with intel pentium 4 ht and one using intel 945gc
onboard graphic card paired with intel pentium dual-core.

after 8 hours of working hours, the system won't shutdown again. funny
thing, if the uptime is small, the system will reboot or poweroff just
fine.
