I've tried to login from a remote PC with ssh; restarting gdm make login
screen reappear but mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. ctrl-alt-bksp
(enabled in xorg.conf) and ctrl-alt-(1-6) doesn't work either.

Same problem here, with a desktop PC with integrated Intel graphics.
Removing 'quiet splash' solves the problem.

removed "splash quiet" from grub boot option and problem fixed itself,
so must be an issue with usplash?!?!
