running Eclipse from the repos of Lucid is also freezing for some
seconds until it works again. Running Eclipse from the repos at 32-bit
doesn't have this problem.

mrfelton: also, try increasing the -Xms value. Setting it too low can
cause a lot of full garbage collection passes, which are slow.
