Hey, I had the same problem
I found out that my problem had to do with the fact that I had also
installed the package php-apc.
Assuming this is the case with your installation, go to your Synaptic
Package Manager, search for php-apc and mark it for COMPLETE removal.
Restart your apache witht
I am not sure, I would check your apache logs and see if you can
determine what is causing things not to work for you. Best of luck!

fyi - uninstalling typo3 resolved the problem as it reverted back to the
original php5.conf and php5.load files
