I have this issue in Ubuntu Jaunty with the 180.29 driver installed from
the normal packages in the repository (180.27 was not working either)

I have the same issue in 9.04 on mythbuntu.
I think this could be related to lunchpad bug 325115. It sounds like
they just hit the problem coming at it from a different direction. This
bug has a workaround and is supposedly fixed upstream, just waiting on
the fixes to come down.

What version of ubuntu are you using and how did you install the 180.xx
drivers?
Was it from the updates repo or using the nvidia install?
