Here's a link which describes some of the possible kernel parameters
which can be used. I'll cut and paste the bit about irqpoll.

and with irqpoll and disk at boot.
seems better. i get a device now. what exactly does irqpoll do, are the
docs on it somewhere? does this mean my sata card can't hot plug? it
has esata ports (thats what i am using).

What happens if you boot with the "irqpoll" option?
1) Press 'Escape' key at the 3 second pause by Grub bootloader.
2) Then press 'e' (edit) on the buggy kernel entry, followed by 'e' again on
the kernel line.
3) Add "irqpoll" (without quotes) to the end of the line.
