Withdrawn. FAT32 drive via USB now works perfectly. After reporting
this bug upgraded kernel to 2.6.27-11-generic from 2.6.27-9. Not sure if
that's what fixed it, but no matter, this bug has disappeared.

I tried the "sudo rmmod ehci_hcd" command at the above referenced site.
Now I'm not getting a response when plugging in the drive. Here's the
output from lsusb and dmesg:
