Since I've moved to a stock kernel, all has been well on the crash
front.

I have managed to move onto a stock Intrepid kernel from the kernel
mentioned in this report.
I still have the GRUB menu entry and it broadly works, so I could pursue
this report if necessary.
However, given that AFAICT the stock ubuntu 8.10 kernel is working as
well as the custom kernels is this
