I don't have an external monitor attached, but docking the laptop
disables the on-board VGA port and enables the one on the UltraBase.

Do you happen to have a external monitor attached?
Does perhaps "dmesg" show gnome-settings-daemon crashing? (Happens here,
and also not easily catcheable by gdb)

I attached to g-s-d with gdb, and g-s-d doesn't crash. It just exits.
