Have you ever tried using VLC? Something like this:
vlc v4l2:///dev/video0
Then, with advanced controls, you will be able to record the stream.
I've started using this as a workaround, but now I use it exclusively.

Same with me. I've just been trying all sorts of random programs to get
my webcam to record and preview at the same time - it seems like nobody
uses V4L2, and the ones that do are broken. I'll give it a few days, but
I'm probably just going to have to uninstall luvcview like the rest.
