I have made exactly the same experience with intel gm45.
The XServer always failed to start with 2.6.28-8. After hours to get the
problem i started 2.6.28-6 and it works.
To compare where the difference between 2.6.28-6 and 2.6.28-8 is, i started
2.6.28-8 again. AND it works too!

I have a similar problem with Xserver on debian. It doesn't load x if i
have intelfb on grub, when i'm not using intel framebuffer the problem
doesn't appear...
To be precise it loads X but it freezes in the black scren...

Well, I can't really explain it, but it's working again. There was
nothing I've done intentional besides starting an older kernel after the
new one failed twiece. Now it also works with the new kernel.
