I am getting the same issue but with alpha 4 after installing the latest updates today. I had no boot problem after upgrading 8.10 to 9.04 alpha 4. If I disable the splash screen the system boots without any problem. That confirms the solution written by Patrick Kilgore. My computer is an Acer 5

While booting from the livecd I went to F6 other options and then on the boot line I took out the end of the line which was "quiet splash --". It still booted to a black screen but I did notice it was about 3 lines after GDM loaded. I did go back and try most of the other options and it booted wi
