This is still present for me in Intrepid / maximus 0.4.8 but I haven't
tried any later version. Plan to upgrade soon, and I will let you know
if it's still there.

There could be a connection between the problem exhibited by Metacity in
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/maximus/+bug/291013 and what's happening
here. If Maximus tries to maximise a window which is larger than the
screen (and cannot be made smaller), then there seems to be un-
documented behaviour
