I believe this issue is related to your video driver reenabling the
backlight as it is suspending with X. This happens to me with the
closed-source nVidia driver, but not nv.
Do you have nVidia graphics? Does it behave differently with the
different drivers?

I can solve this issue commenting this line in /etc/acpi/lid.sh:
if [ `CheckPolicy` == 0 ]; then exit; fi
But there is always this "flash" (screen turning off, then on then off
again during 2 seconds).

I have a similar bug with Gutsy. When I close the lid, the screen turn
off but turn on back one second after. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron
6400. Sometimes that works though but I don't know why... However It
ALWAYS turn off AND turn on AND (if It works) turn off back again.
No problem with Kubuntu
