Yeah, so I can confirm the backlight doesn't work with Ubuntu's
proprietary driver (one that it installs with), fglrx, and radeonhd. The
problem is that Vista gives me twice the battery life of Ubuntu just
because it dims the backlight, Ubuntu is kind of unusable for me unless
I am on a charger.

It is very important that the fglrx driver (the proprietary one from amd/ati)
is removed from the system, where an open driver should work. Also it can be
important to shut down you computer and start it again if you want to use a
free driver, because fglrx changes some registers, which get only
