I'm marking this bug as invalid because soundkonverter 1.0.0 is already
released and doesn't include the "KDE audio CD protocol" ripper backend anymore.
soundkonverter 0.3.x bugs won't be fixed.

This appears to be a case of the defaults not being sensibly set.
Clearly others are hitting the same problem:
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1192473.html
as did I yesterday.
Changing the backend does work, but to resolve this bug the defaults

The default backend for ripping was "KDE audio CD protocol". I changed to
cdparanoia and it started working.
Again, thanks a lot!

Adrian

ripping. at the same time you could try to use another backend.
supported are the kde audiocd io, cdda2wav and cdparanoia (you may need to
install these packages on your system).
