It says "Unknown monitor" because the Nvidia driver doesn't support
RandR 1.2 or higher. There is nothing we can do about it.
You should use "nvidia-settings" instead of gnome-display-properties.

Alright this seems to be an issue then with the non-free version of the
nvidia driver. Unfortunately when it comes to that package there isn't
much we can do in terms of troubleshooting after we determine it is that
driver. Is there something the the non-free driver doesn't do for you

Just for trouble shooting purposes could you try changing the "nvidia"
in your xorg.conf to "nv". It will try and use the open source
driver... This will help me to determine what package to assign it to.
