Happens to me as well...and I can't find a fix anywhere on google.
Linux Backports does not work. I thought I as OK for weeks, but it
locked up again last night.
2.6.27-9-generic #1 SMP Thu Nov 20 22:15:32 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
My network connection is running N against a newer routerher
