I had this problem too and I found this report when googling
I only started having the problem when I installed this plugin to thunderbird:

FWIW, this is with fedora17, not ubuntu, so it's definitely not a
problem with ubuntu dis

Problem was solved by removing Google contacts.
BTW the problem was brought up a long time ago and i did not try to add
Google contacts again.

Hi John,
It took some puzzling but I made it work. I kept thinking the problem
with starting up offline had to do with the gmail/imap add-on.
1. Removed imap/gmail, not solution.
2. Tried offline.startup_state using 1,2,3,4 and 0: no avail. Kept it on 0.
3. Removed all references to gmail from p

I think it is only IMAP because gmail imap is the last account i added,
but i did not notice it immediately afterwards. All the others are POP
and have been around for years in Thunderbird.

Please provide verions or everything including extensions/addons themes
