Hi,
Sorry, but I have an entirely new system now that doesn't use nvidia. I
guess this could have been a driver issue, since noone else seem to be
complaining. However, it could also be that this problem is so commonly
known that people edit the xorg.conf without considering that nvidia-
settings

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to
your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

That's what I thought too. I was actually surprised to find nvidia-
settings in Launchpad.
Embarressing for Nvidia that they make make mistakes like that with an
architecture they've constructed themselves.

Try upgrade the drivers to 177.80.
Since nvidia-settings is closed-source proprietary device drivers, I don't
think Ubuntu can do anything about it.
Complain to Nvidia.
