I know this is kinda old, but I had the exact same thing happen on a Xen
VPS running 8.04.01 LTS as well. Made me flip out when everything

The guys at rimuhosting.com had the issue partly solved
"The error was caused by /lib/tls/i686 I have it removed and mysql now
runs successfully. see below
apt-get remove libc6-i686 "
