The bug was easily reproduced in 8.10 and there were probably 15-20 people
who emailed me personally about it. It seems to be fixed in 9.04..
HOWEVER!!! Now ACPI events (or other) are not working with closing lid and
initiating suspend/sleeps. Also power buttons are not being seen by Gnome

I have the same problem with a Thinkpad X41 tablet - during the
unvoluntary brightness shift the whole system seems to become
unresponsive. The cursor nearly freezes and doesn't move continuously
anymore - any pressed key might be acted on after some seconds.

I have had this problem and reported but they linked it with this bug,
and i havent even got a X40.
I have a Toshiba Satellite L40-17U and the screen is a LG Philips. I
have Ubuntu 8.10 and the screen dimms with or wilthout the AC power.
If anyone needs more information on my Laptop please ask.
I have this problem on my X40 as well, but it only happens when it's on
battery, and I've never encounter this in 8.04.1

I'm having the same problem, then I ran
$ gnome-power-manager --verbose
Which gave the output:

The screen had flickered for a second, but stopped, and now the constant
dimming has stop
This is seemingly a problem with gnome-power-manager, acpi_listen
displays keypresses immediately. Also, if you change power manager
settings like "dim while idle", the brightness OSD stops responding for
a period of time and the selectable brightness levels become severely
reduced.

I can confirm that this is also a problem for me on my X41t. The screen
will dim way down and then come back up. This happens primarily when on
the battery. This was not the case in 8.04.
