I just discovered bug #278471 - I think this one might be a duplicate of
if. At least the work around of switching off KDE's service for
"Detecting RANDR (monitor) changes" solved the problem for me.

Same problem here. I disabled DDC for a try: the flickering persisted
and Xorg logged on every flicker a message of DDC not being enabled.
When starting X with the monitor attached, the bug appears after the
login (not in KDM). I suppose this bug is somewhere in KDE but occurs
only in conjunction w
