Excuse me for bothering you with this - I could solve the problem with
the support of ubuntuusers.de forum, the problem was a non existing
.bashrc in my home folder. I copied the one from /etc/skel/.bashrc to my
/home/ and everything runs as expected.
Only thing left to answer is, why the file was
Thank you for assigning this bug the right package. I just wanted to point out,
that I'm aware of the need to double tap key to show the commands.
Neither one tap completes an exact command nor do two taps show me the
possibilities.

Ubuntu better. I've moved this report to the bash-completion package.
I've also tried unsuccessfully to reproduce this using bash-completion
20060301-4ubuntu1 from intrepid repository. I noticed that needs
to be double tapped whe
