you are welcome to work on the required changes, this has been discussed
several times and it has been decided to not hurry in those changes, the
debian pkg-gnome is interested in such changes too though and if
somebody is doing the required work that will be considered

Trivial or not, it is desirable and should be tasked for Jaunty.
The specification provides for exactly our situation, and having the
major desktop environments all play nice is certainly a desirable
outcome.
